The purpose of this project is to expand the amount of students and families Next Generation Scholars can reach through the incorporation of a web based platform that will allow for a widespread and easily accessible rendition of services and information they provide.
Next Generation Scholars is a college access program that believes equal access to higher education is the key to making positive change within a community. Their mission is to level the playing field by providing dedicated underserved students with all the advantages available to those of privilege. Currently, they offer a college preparatory curriculum, psychological services, leadership training, and supportive social services.
This application will benefit low income students who do not have access to quality academic and guidance counseling. The average counselor to student ratio in California is 1061:1. California ranks last in the nation in this area. The students in our district are given 15 minutes of college counseling in the Junior year and 15 minutes in the senior year and this is just not enough. Low income students who cannot afford outside help and do not go to schools who can afford to have updated websites suffer the most. Studies show that if a low income student can gain access to college they can break the cycle of poverty in their families.
